It’s time to color! Yes even for MOMS!
By Debbie Spector Weisman
It’s been one of those days. The kids have left the house in shambles, you open the refrigerator to take out ingredients to make meatballs and discover you’re out of ground beef, your husband is off on a business trip, and you get an email from your boss reminding you that the report you’ve put off doing needs to be delivered tomorrow morning. To top it off, it’s raining outside and the dog has tracked paw prints of mud all over your newly washed floor.
You have two choices: You can feel frustrated and angry and take it out on yourself—or even worse—your kids. Or you can take charge of your feelings and channel them in a way that will leave you feeling de-stressed, physically relaxed, emotionally calm and clear headed.
We all know that the second choice is the way to go, but then we get stumped by the question: How? One solution is the subject of this Dream Date for Moms—coloring books.
That’s right. Coloring books. But not the ones that your kids use. I’m talking about coloring books specifically created for adults, using adult themes and complex drawings. They’ve become incredibly popular over the past few years and are available everywhere, from Amazon to your local supermarket. There’s no skill level involved and, because no one has to see your pages but you, there’s no judgment either. It’s a fun way to ease your stress and that’s what makes it a perfect Dream Date for Moms.
There’s some debate over whether this can be called art therapy, since these drawings are done by you for your own enjoyment and use. But they are therapeutic, as the coloring process can be relaxing and calming and even get you into that zone where you actually change your brain state, taking you to your happy place.
